The Tasmanian Devil Insurance Program has been established by the Tasmanian Department of Primary Industries and Water (DPIW) and the Australian Regional Association of Zoological Parks and Aquaria (ARAZPA), and endorsed by the Save the Tasmanian Devil Program. The Insurance Population can currently maintain 170 Tasmanian devils, and its purpose is to provide a framework for the establishment and maintenance of a single Insurance Population of devils free from the devastating Devil Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD). Some of the insurance population have been moved to zoos or parks on the mainland, such as the Australian Reptile Park in New South Wales.
